Bharathidasan University was established by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu in 1982 at Trichy.  It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.  The University has International recognition and is accredited with ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).  Bharathidasan University established the Institute for Entrepreneurs and Career Development (IECD) in the year 2004 for promoting entrepreneurship and career development among the Students and non student youth.  Presently IECD functions as flexible skill-based Training Centre for youngsters including School dropouts and passed out Students with vocational skills leading to Self-employment and also eventually enabling them to emerge as successful Entrepreneurs.  Now IECD is functioning as an improvised “Community College / Polytechnic.
